The Kawerau region offers a surprising variety of natural and recreational attractions. Start with the Maurie Kjar Aquatic Centre, home to free public geothermal pools and a large spa on Plunket Street. Just a short drive away, Awakeri Hot Springs and campground provide another relaxing soak, while the rustic Waitangi Soda Springs in Rotoma offer a unique natural mineral pool experience.
For nature lovers, the spectacular Tarawera Falls is a must-see. Accessible on weekends and public holidays, it’s a scenic 30-minute drive through pine forest followed by a short walking track to the falls (permit required from the Information Centre, $10 per car). Adventure-seekers can also enjoy the kayaking rapids on the Tarawera River, best viewed from the walkway downstream of the Waterhouse Street bridge.
Within a short drive, you’ll find the clear waters of Lake Rotoma and nearby Rotorua lakes, perfect for swimming, boating, and water sports.
